Finding and Perfecting Narrative Essay Topics

There are two ways to approach a narrative essay. Ask yourself this question: Am I going to tell my own story, or am I going to help somebody else tell his/her story? If you are going to tell your own story, then be prepared to commit to telling a meaningful story about yourself. Essentially, you will be preparing and writing your own narrative. On the other hand, if you are going to narrate another person’s story, your job is to help the reader understand what that person is trying to communicate. In this case, your job is to facilitate that communication without inserting too much of your own opinion or narrative into your writing. Once you decide your approach, or your instructor has made this choice for you, your next step is to consider which narrative essay topics that would be the best choice for you.

If you have decided to tell your own story, your first step is to come up with narrative essay ideas. Which story would you like to tell? What are the details of that story? Are you going to be the protagonist or the antagonist? One of the most complicated things about writing a personal narrative essay is that you are writing a fact based essay, but the narrative style obligates you to follow the format of telling a story. In other words, you must consider the characters who are involved in your narrative.  You must give space for them to promote their points of view. In the end, writing a narrative essay about yourself can be both rewarding and challenging.
